An Organized Kitchen For Great Food!

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

If you are feeling overwhelmed with the way your kitchen is looking, it may be time to get tidy. Organizing your kitchen cabinets, counters and drawers will leave you feeling fresh and ready to tackle creating your healthy meals. Once the heart of your home is organized and fresh, the rest of your house will likely follow suit.

When was the last time you used that thing? Yes, that cameron cookware stainless steel stovetop smoker, when did you use it last? If it is part of your ordinary cooking life, keep it. If not, think of ways to give it away or sell it.

If you find that you have a bunch of things that you haven’t used in a while, think about giving them away to someone who may actually use them. You may even consider selling them for some kind of profit. Clean out your kitchen and make a little money as well!

If you have a lot of things that are broke or nearly broke, get rid of them. After all, what good are rice cookers to you if none of them work? Sift through your appliances and gadgets. Only keep one of each kind, and one that works. Otherwise, you are clogging up your kitchen space.

Consider the items you use a lot. What area of the kitchen do you use them most? Keep these items such as utensils near the area you work most with them. For instance, keep a utensil jar near your stovetop. This will keep spatulas and other stirring spoons handy while you are cooking.

You can use the buffet in your dining room set as a small storage space for items infrequently used. Remember; only leave items in your kitchen that you actually use. Your space is limited, so do not clog your cabinets with things you do not benefit from.

Have a clear counter space. The counter is one of the most frequently used areas in the kitchen. You have to clean it often and having a cluttered counter will make this more tedious. A clean space will give your kitchen a tidy feel to it as well.

If you do not know where to start when you want to organize your kitchen, start in small steps. Do not take everything out of your drawers and cabinets at once. Only tackle a few drawers or cabinets at a time, even one at a time should be a good start.

Zojirushi: The Greatest Rice Cookers

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

Zojirushi is a leading name in rice cookers all over the world.  They manufacture high quality, durable rice cookers for all budget levels.  Although they produce some cheaper rice cookers most of their products are higher end and often run over $100.  If you take ever make a trip over to Japan you will probably notice that almost all homes and restaurants use Zojirushi rice cookers.  An entire nation of rice fanatics using a single brand of rice cooker has to say something for its quality.

A large portion of Zojirushi rice cookers are higher end, made for those who love eating a variety of rice and who care about the end product when cooking.  However they do make a number of more simple, cheaper rice cookers as well.

Here are some of the major features that Zojirushi offers in their different rice cookers:

Warming

Just about every Zojirushi rice cooker that’s out there comes with a warming ability.  However, some of the cheaper models only can keep rice warm after it’s finished cooking whereas the higher-end models come with the ability to re-warm rice or other items.  But no matter what rice cooker you use make sure to take care when using the warming function with only 1 or 2 cups of rice as it could dry it out.

The Ability to Steam

Getting a Zojirushi rice cooker with the ability to steam is a good idea.  There really isn’t much difference between one with the steamer feature and one without except the one with is designed to hold a steamer plate that comes with the rice cooker.  With a steamer you can steam vegetables, fish, certain types of rice such as Jasmine and Thai sticky rice and a ton more, it’s a fantastic feature that really opens up the options for your rice cooker.

Micom Technology such as Fuzzy Logic and Neuro Fuzzy

Fuzzy technology is very common in Zojirushi rice cookers, in fact, just about all mid to upper-range models come with it.  If you are particular about the way your rice comes out then you shouldn’t get any rice cooker without this technology.  Neuro Fuzzy is a newer version of Fuzzy Logic but both work very well.  Rice cookers with this feature are able to constantly update the temperature and cooking time, thus allowing it to always produce a perfect pot of rice.  It also helps reduce the impact of poor measuring or other possible human errors.

Induction Heating

Most rice cookers have a heating coil below the cooking bowl that is used to cook the rice.  However there are a few of the higher-end Zojirushi rice cookers that come with a technology called ‘induction heating’.  This process does not use the simple heating coil and thus creates a much more uniform heating of the rice.  This type of heating allows for a much more efficient cooking and allows the rice to stay more uniformly cooked.

Again, Zojirushi rice cookers are the best in my book, finding the right one for you can sometimes seem a bit complicated.  I hope that the features described in this article help you in finding the perfect rice cooker for you.

Kitchen Product Spotlight: Rice Cookers

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Rice cookers are, in my opinion, just about the most useful device anybody could have in their kitchen.  However, there are still many people who have never used a rice cooker, nor do they see why they should ever start.  But on the opposite side of that coin there are many others who have used rice cookers and swear that they will never go back to the pot-on-the-stove technique. Or, if you like rice but don’t know how to make it, all you need to do is pick up a rice cooker and you’ll never need to think about learning how to cook rice.

Due to many varying reasons, rice is becoming ever more popular in the west, but cooking rice can be time consuming and if you mess up you can easily ruin an entire meal.  Using a rice cooker is incredibly simple and makes cooking rice all but foolproof.

When you cook your rice in a rice cooker, not only is it easy, but it comes out perfect each and every time.  Once you start cooking with rice cookers you will save a lot of time and energy in the kitchen, allowing you to do more important stuff, like taking a nap.

What to look for when looking for your perfect rice cooker:

1) The rice cooker’s price tag

You can get the bare-bones rice cooker for $15-$30 or if rice is a big part of your diet you might want to consider a higher-priced cooker, some of these can easily reach to $150-$200 or even more.  Simple, inexpensive rice cookers usually have a non-stick inner pot, a glass lid and a start button.  As long as you measure your water properly it will cook your rice to near perfection.  However if you enjoy a variety of styles of rice then the basic cooker may not give you the quality that you’d like.

Cheaper rice cookers can’t always cook brown rice with the quality that many would like, nor do they have options such as a warmer that will keep the rice warm for hours after it’s finished without drying it out.  Another option that’s very nice but not usually available on the cheap rice cookers is the timer.  The timer will allow you to have your rice perfectly cooked right when you get home from work or when you wake up in the morning, allowing you to enjoy rice with your meals no matter how busy your schedule is.

2) How big of a rice cooker do you need?

Rice cookers’ prices vary as much as their prices, from small bowls that can cook up to 3 cups of rice at a time all the way up to the largest commercial bowls that can cook 50 cups or more.

For a single person I normally recommend a rice cooker that holds 3-5 cups, 5 cups is great in case of company or if you want to make a lot extra for  fried rice or other dishes that call for day-old rice.  Small families shouldn’t go smaller than 5 cups and the 10 cup sizes are great for larger families.

3) Other options

Rice cookers some with many different options, here is a list of things to pay attention to:
Make sure the bowl is non-stick
For flip-top lids, having a removable inner lid makes clean-up much easier
If you cook different types of rice make sure the rice cooker supports them for better results
Measuring lines on the inside of the bowl allow for more precise measuring of water.

There’s a lot to choose from when deciding on a rice cooker, I’ve been using a higher-end cooker for years now and couldn’t see my life in the kitchen without it.
